Orquil Studio is owned and run by Alan S Watson and Nichola J S Watson.

Alan specialises in Seascape, and Landscape drawings and paintings. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1972, has lived and worked in Orkney since 1976, and was Head of Art in Kirkwall Grammar School until he retired in 2012.

Their studio is the old Orquil Church in the parish of Rendall. This small late Victorian kirk had already been converted to a studio by the late Margaret Tait, renowned Orkney filmmaker and author.

The work is executed in charcoal, gouache, watercolour, acrylics, and oils, and ranges in scale from small watercolour drawings, to large drawings and paintings. The main inspiration is the constantly changing, and fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, which the weather brings to the land and sea.
